If you just happened to be wondering what I would wear if I was Cady from Mean Girls, you’ve come to the right place. You’ve probably heard me mention my ideal coming-of-age movie lifestyle a few too many times before, so I decided to make that lifestyle a little bit closer to reality. Here’s what I would wear if I was a character in a coming-of-age movie (inspired by TikTok, of course).
I would like to mention that a lot of my friends think that in a movie I’d be the main character’s supportive but more sensible best friend, but many also think I’d be most alpha and be the main. So, think of the girl-next-door, pretty trendy, casual yet cute kinda vibe. Overall, this style is like mine but more effort put in, but cut me some slack because my closet selection is not that extensive (and because I don't have a tripod or a full-length mirror so enjoy these very low-qual mirror pics). I wish I was bestdressed, but all of your wishes don't come true.
Also, a note on the clothes in this post: these were all bought over a year ago. I used to shop at fast fashion stores like Forever 21 just because of the cheap price, but I’m definitely becoming more conscious of the negative impacts of fast fashion not only ethically but environmentally. I haven’t done any clothes shopping since winter break, but I’m 100% going to be making better shopping choices moving forward, and I hope you all will as well. If you’re looking for places to shop, check out this video from Vanessa Nagoya that includes so many sustainable and affordable stores! Anyway, this was really fun to make, so hope you all enjoy it! Hopefully this brings me that much closer to becoming Lara Jean Covey.
School:
Sweater: H&M
Collared shirt: my mom’s closet (standard white collared shirt)
Jeans: Kohl’s
Shoes: Converse
I lowkey look like Arthur the Aardvark, but you know, I think This is the classic school look that you’d see for most of the movie since we have to have the school scenes with all the high school drama. I’m just going to assume that the high school in the movie doesn’t have a uniform because it makes it so much more fun. I tried to keep it more conservative just because of them dress codes (gotta love ‘em -- just kidding). This outfit is intended for colder weather than the 80 degrees it was in my parents’ bathroom. I was sweating. Outfit inspo: carina on YouTube, specifically this video.
Casual:
Sweater: Hollister
Shorts: Marshall’s
Shoes: Taiwan, but they’re knock off Vans
Necklace: Amazon
This is the outfit that I would wear at a coffee shop studying or just chilling at home. Pretty comfy and relaxed, but channeling that “messy yet cute” vibe just in case that cute guy from school walks in (wink wink). Outfit inspo: kind of Lara Jean Covey, but not really. I wanted to do the khaki shorts, long socks, and flannel outfit, but didn’t have the stuff for it; I also wanted to do the outfit with the cardigan at the coffee shop in P.S. I Still Love You when Peter is late, but I really wanted to pair the paper bag shorts with the varsity sweater.
On a date:
Dress: Macy’s
Cardigan: Cotton Emporium
Shoes: Kelly & Katie
Necklace: Amazon
Being a character in a coming-of-age movie, I have to have a love interest. And aforementioned love interest and I must go on cute dates so all of the people watching can be envious of our perfect love life. I wouldn’t pull something as fancy as Lara Jean did on her and Peter’s first real date, but I’d still get out a nice dress with the cardigan to dress it down (or maybe my date can give me his coat hehe). I’d imagine this date would be a nice dinner with some funny banter, but then going out and doing something fun (and overly romantic), like stargazing or getting ice cream (mint chip?) or playing random carnival games. I was very scared standing on the top of the steps and taking these photos. That is commitment, people. Also I understand that I’m standing pigeon-toed in the second picture, don’t come for me. Outfit inspo: the outfit I wore to 2019 Sadie Hawkins.
Out with friends:
Top: Macy’s
Denim Jacket: TJ Maxx
Leggings: Nordstrom
Shoes: same knock off Vans
Necklace: Amazon
I would wear this when hanging out over the weekend with close friends when I want to look relatively cute (because what if I run into someone from school?) but still want to keep it casual. Outfit inspo: Elle Evans from The Kissing Booth 2 when she’s out with Lee and sees Marco playing the guitar and singing in Spanglish (swoooooon).
Party:
Top: Charlotte Russe
Leggings: Nordstrom
Shoes: Guess
Necklace: Amazon
Bracelets: Gifts
What’s a coming-of-age movie without a high school party? No drinking here, don’t worry. If my coming-of-age movie had a wild drunk scene, I would not be happy. I just thought this outfit was cute, and then I added the heels for that “yes I’m trying hard to look good” factor. Realistically, they would be ditched within ten minutes of the party because even though they’re wedges, I have no clue how I walked in them for a good six hours at freshman homecoming. Outfit inspo: probably VSCO.
