Oh, so you’re telling me that it‘s 2021 now? That’s wild. I say this every year, but especially in 2020, this year flew by. I feel like last month I was watching Avatar: The Last Airbender and baking banana bread every three days. Sigh. I wish I had the time to bake banana bread every three days, but I don’t think junior year is allowing me to have that free time.
Despite how fast this year went by, it’s now officially January 1st, which means that it’s a brand-new year and we need some brand-new resolutions. I explained what my new year’s resolutions were for last year (wow I can say that now), whether I kept them or not, and my tips for goal-setting in my previous post, but I never actually told y’all what my new year’s resolutions for this year are. In the past, I think I always had a good idea of what my goals for the year would be (even though I wasn’t the best at sticking with them), and they were usually the popular resolutions of working out, eating healthy, drinking more water, etc. However, I actually ended up doing a good job of keeping my resolutions last year (take that, statistics), so now I have to think of all new ones. I had a bit of trouble building up my list, but I think a lot of these goals are things that I’ve always told myself that I would do, but I didn’t take the initiative to actually do them. They’re in no way big tasks, and I’m not flipping my life upside down or anything, but I think they’ll make a big difference in my life. Without further ado, here are my 2021 new year’s resolutions!
I just thought this was pretty haha
1. Read the news for 10 minutes every day
This is one of the resolutions I was the worst at in 2020, so I decided to try again this year, but make it a bit more specific this time. These 10 minutes might be right before my first class, during my lunch break, or after school lets out, but I want to take that time to stay educated and up-to-date on world happenings.
2. Post on my blog at least once a week
I may not have enough time to post twice a week, but I want to keep creating content. Blogging is something that I really value and love doing, so I would hate for it to stop being a big part of my life.
3. Get up and move around for at least five minutes for every hour I’m sitting down (and refrain from using screens during these five minutes)
This is something that I was always pretty bad at. I would sit down for hours at a time, and when I took breaks, I usually took my phone with me. I want to take more frequent breaks from my screen and get moving so I don’t settle into a sedentary lifestyle and work for hours on end.
4. Put away all screens 30 minutes before bed
Again, this is something that I was always terrible at. Especially with school, I always found myself on YouTube right before I go to sleep. It does no good for my health, and I want to change that. I could pull out my ukulele, read a paper book, journal, listen to a podcast, or do virtually anything that doesn’t involve a screen, but the blue light just needs to go away. I would also love to get into reading paper books instead of ebooks, but that's an expensive hobby I am too broke to do.
5. Take 24 hours away from social media once a month
I’ve taken these phone breaks occasionally throughout last year, and I’ve always felt great during them. However, they never really became a part of my routine, even though they should. This is all part of my scheme to stop spending so much time looking at a screen, and I want to regularly make a conscious effort to stop living my life on social media.
6. Go outside for at least fifteen minutes every day
This is something that totally didn’t happen during quarantine last year. I need my daily sunshine, and even when it’s 20 degrees outside, I don’t want to skip out on that daily sunshine.
7. Be more present
As I was wrapping up this list, I realized the importance of having goals on here that aren't simply good for my physical health. I want to be more present -- in life, in conversations, with other people. I want to not only fully engage myself in conversations more, but I also want to contribute more towards those conversations and not bottle up my feelings. This year, I want to spend more time outside of the world in my head and more in the world with other people.
8. Reach out to people more
Especially with quarantine, it's been difficult maintaining connections, and I've found that I've grown distant from people and felt lonely because I don't take the initiative to reach out to people first, and that's definitely something that I want to work on more. I don't want to be afraid to say hello.
9. Maintain all of my new year’s resolutions from last year
Eating well, exercises, drinking water, all of that. I want to keep up those healthy habits, even if they’re not a designated goal for 2021. I’m going to keep those habits on my habit tracker, and hopefully we’ll get the same good results with those in 2021 as we did in 2020.
Those were all of my new year’s resolutions! I’ll definitely update y’all a few months in so you can find out how I’m doing. Let me know what you think, and hopefully you write down some goals of your own for this year as well. Happy New Year, everyone!
