For All the Hopeless Romantics…

This one’s for you. And let me be real clear, this one’s for me too. Years of reading books and watching rom coms have given me terribly unrealistic standards, poor eyesight, and all the qualities of a hopeless romantic. The bar is so high yet so low, people.

Basically, I wanted to give y’all a playlist of some of my favorite love songs that scream to me “teenage rom-com soundtrack”. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have a clue what love is, but I thought this lovey-dovey playlist would be pretty nice to create. I know in my previous playlist videos I’ve just gone off on tangents about each song, but I wanted to make this one more organized. For each song, I’ll be talking about my favorite lyric, the meaning, and what it makes me think of. Hope you enjoy it!

1. “i don’t want to watch the world end with someone else” - Clinton Kane

My favorite lyric: “And I, wish we didn't say goodbye / 'Cause we're just standin' still / And I don't really know, what tomorrow holds”

Meaning: As the title states, this song is about not knowing what tomorrow holds, but realizing that you don't want to watch the world end with someone else.

What it makes me think of: Deep, passionate love that breaks all boundaries. Just listen to Clinton Kane’s music this man is a genius.

2. “anything 4 u” - LANY

My favorite lyric: “I'll catch a flight, go to the moon / Lay on the floor of your living room / And talk about the things that make you cry”

Meaning: “This is one of the sweetest songs on the album, and maybe one of the sweetest songs in our entire catalogue. I wanted to tell the story of a young love that hadn’t come to fruition yet—that moment when you realize you’re in love with your best friend.” - Paul Klein

What it makes me think of: The friends to lovers trope. September 2020 listening to “mama’s boy” and trying not to have a mental breakdown over my buggy code. Vanessa Nagoya and how I want to be her best friend.

3. “For Real” - Lana Condor

My favorite lyric: “Are my tears see-through, does my heart bleed through? / I learn not to need you each time I leave town”

Meaning: Knowing that you truly love someone because you’re able to sustain yourself without them but you’re always going to come back home to them.

What it makes me think of: How I want the relationship that Lana and Anthony have. Late summer nights.

By the queen herself.

4. “Paper Rings” - Taylor Swift

My favorite lyric: “I like shiny things, but I'd marry you with paper rings”

Meaning: “The whole song is just basically reminiscing on fun memories. And then in the chorus, it talks about how […], your whole life you talk with your friends about how, like, ‘Oh my God. Do you wanna get married? What do you want your ring to look like? What kind of ring do you want?’ I don’t know, I just feel like if you really love someone, love someone, you’d be like, ‘I don’t care.’ And so, it talks about that concept as the hook.” - Taylor Swift

What it makes me think of: Day and June from Legend. Their paperclip rings. The paperclip rings I’ve made myself because I want their love. Booktok. How I would literally marry any book guy with a paper ring because I love them so much.

5. “Trying on Rings” - Maddie & Tae

My favorite lyric: “It all started with a "Hey, can I get your number?" / To "Whatcha doing Friday night?"

Meaning: “A couple of years ago when my husband and I were seriously looking at rings, we went and tried on rings, and we both had the flashbacks back to when we were 15, 16 years old, dating in high school, me wearing his football number and things like that.” - Maddie Font

What it makes me think of: Small town love you only see in the movies. High school sweetheart stories.

Maia, if you ever see this, ily

6. “cliché” - mxmtoon

My favorite lyric: “You said “Hey” / And I said “Hello / "What’s your name? I’d really like to know about you"”

Meaning: An innocent story of falling in love (very sweet).

What it makes me think of: Crushes. First learning ukulele. Sweet boys with charming smiles.

7. “Speechless” - Dan + Shay

My favorite lyric: “I thank God you can read my mind / 'Cause when you look at me with those eyes”

Meaning: “It describes the scene of a wedding, and the groom’s delight at the beauty of the bride. / It is also about not getting used to your partner’s beauty. After all the time they have been together, he still is surprised and amazed with her beauty.” - Genius Lyrics

What it makes me think of: Freshman year jamming out to country music during gym class with my friends. Bringing on all the feels after hearing this song during sophomore year.

8. “Inside Out” - Madilyn Paige ft. John Allred (originally by The Chainsmokers and Charlee)

My favorite lyric: “Let me see the dark sides as well as the bright”

Meaning: Wanting to learn and love all the sides of someone

What it makes me think of: Madilyn’s battle round performance with Tanner James when they were on The Voice. They sang “Everything Has Changed” by Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran and I swooned. I watched that video more times than I’d want to admit.

9. “About Love” - MARINA

My favorite lyric: “But you're in my head, you're in my blood / And it feels so good to hurt so much”

Meaning: Not knowing a lot about love but knowing that you’re falling for someone and you love being with them.

What it makes me think of: To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. John Ambrose McClaren (that man has my heart I swear). The scenes from the TATB book that were cut from the movie (assassins, the USO party, John’s red Mustang, getting snowed in at the nursing home, midnight snowball fights, John’s birthday present).

The best thing that's come from my Discover Weekly

10. “Love Her Anyways” - Hearts & Colors

My favorite lyric: “Cuz she's got those eyes so blue / I love the way she moves”

Meaning: Loving someone so wholeheartedly, even with all their flaws

What it makes me think of: Wanting to fall in love with a musician so they can write you a love song like this. Embarrassing wedding speeches.

11. “Fallin’ For You” - Colbie Caillat

My favorite lyric: “I am trying, not to tell you / But I want to / I'm scared of what you'll say”

Meaning: “My first single “Fallin' For You” you is about me falling in love with this guy who was actually just my friend for a while and this one night we hung out together, he held my hand and I just remember I did not think of him as a friend anymore, I was completely falling for him and the next day, I couldn’t stop thinking about the situation, and I wrote “Fallin' For You”" - Colbie Callait

What it makes me think of: Caroline Manning’s good vibes. Nostalgic times.

12. “I Was Made for Loving You” - Tori Kelly ft. Ed Sheeran

My favorite lyric: “I was made for loving you / Even though we may be hopeless hearts just passing through”

Meaning: “The song is about a girl who is worried about entering a relationship with a man she is in love with. She knows nothing about the man but she feels it is a destined love. The man feels the same as he reassures her and they begin their relationship despite the uncertainty.” - Genius Lyrics

What it makes me think of: The adorable cover of this Madilyn Paige and Tanner James did of this a couple years after their battle round on The Voice. The Acoustic Hits playlist on Spotify.

13. “Yours” - Russell Dickerson

My favorite lyric: “But I came to life when I first kissed you / The best me has his arms around you”

Meaning: At first being lost and alone, but being revived and made better by the love of someone else.

What it makes me think of: Lovey dovey country songs. Loving the feeling of love. This quote from A Court of Mist and Fury: “He was a ghost. He pretended he wasn't, but he was. You made him come alive again.” (I don’t support SJM but this is my comfort book please don’t hate me)

14. “Love Someone” - Lukas Graham

My favorite lyric: “If you love someone / And you're not afraid to lose 'em / You probably never loved someone like I do”

Meaning: “For me, where the song comes from, the words that I at least tried to put into it had something to do with after I got my daughter, I realized: I can lose this. I can lose my spouse, I can lose my kid if I’m a bad father. I can lose my spouse if I’m a bad husband. I can lose my family if I’m a jerk… It is that dream scenario where you suddenly realize, she could have chosen so many other douche bags but she chose this douche bag, right? I always thought parents that came and talked about this newfound love, I always thought them to be stupid people. I realized, no, that’s how it feels.” - Lukas Graham

What it makes me think of: Winter break. Taxi rides. Feeling all the feels and not knowing what to do with myself but knowing the feelings weren’t reciprocated. Dedicating an entire playlist to my nonexistent relationship with this person and hiding that fact.

15. “Love Story” - Taylor Swift

This one’s required. That is all.

P.S. This song makes me think of freshman year joking with my friends and all secretly loving this song.

Hope y’all enjoyed this lil music session, and see you next time!
