Book Review: Queen of Volts by Amanda Foody

tl;dr FINALE ACTION

Premise

Return to the City of Sin, where the final game is about to begin… and winning will demand the ultimate sacrifice.

Only days after a corrupt election and brutal street war, one last bloodthirsty game has begun. The players? The twenty-two most powerful, notorious people in New Reynes.

After realizing they have no choice but to play, Enne Scordata and Levi Glaisyer are desperate to forge new alliances and bargain for their safety. But while Levi offers false smiles and an even falser peace to the city’s politicians, Enne must face a world where her true Mizer identity has been revealed… and any misstep could turn deadly.

Meanwhile, a far more dangerous opponent has appeared on the board, one plucked right from the most gruesome legends of New Reynes. As the game takes its final, vicious turn, Levi and Enne must decide once and for all whether to be partners or enemies.

Because in a game for survival, there are only losers…

And monsters.

Review

WOW. I knew I was going to enjoy this book, but this was an absolutely fantastic finale to what's become one of my favorites series. Although I loved the first two books, this one is by far my favorite.

One of the most attractive elements of this book was the premise, which is Bryce's game. It's such an intriguing concept, and it reminds me of high school assassins but with much higher stakes. Unlike the first two books, the game in Queen of Volts starts right away, which meant that the action picked up a lot earlier and I was more engaged in the plot (the game is my favorite part). I loved keeping track of who has who as a target and all of the dynamics of the game.

More on the plot: I had no idea where this book was going to go plot-wise. I never saw the (many) plot twists coming, and I was completely surprised at how the book concluded. However, I think it's a very fitting ending that leaves the reader satisfied but also with a few questions. I think it was the best possible way for Amanda Foody to end the series, and each character's finale was created in a way that really suited their character that other endings may not have.

I also loved the introduction of new characters and the further exploration of the relationships between the characters, specifically Levi, Enne, Lola, and a couple of the new characters (Levi and Enne had my heart going for sure; they deserve the world and all the happiness in it). The added POVs of Harvey and Sophia were very interesting and added a new perspective to the story, especially since they're both such integral characters. We also got to see more sides to many of the side characters, such as Grace, Harrison, Delaney, Poppy, and Narinder.

This book made me feel all of the emotions. I screamed, I laughed, I cried, I laughed while crying, I felt it all. After three books, I got so attached to all of the characters that I'm sad to let them all go.

I 100% recommend this book as well as the entire Shadow Game trilogy!
