These kinds of videos always appear in my recommendations on YouTube, so I thought it’d be fun if I made one for myself (Teen Vogue I’m still waiting on my invitation, please and thank you)! Let’s be honest here, no one cares this much about me to want to know this information, but hello, welcome to oversharing on the Internet with Caroline!
I’d describe my music taste as pop, but more of a sad, chill pop. I listen to my fair share of underrated artists (check out that master list of favorites, heh), but boy do I love Taylor Swift. I would create a Spotify playlist with all of these songs, but I’m just uh not tryna give out my last name and photo :’) I really don't know how people put these playlists together in the actual videos, but these are just some songs that mean a lot to me. So, here are twelve songs that could narrate my life better than I could!
I was definitely listening to "She Used to Be Mine" here (in Taiwan)
“You Belong With Me” - Taylor Swift
This was the kindergarten bop back when I had no idea what the lyrics were or what they meant; all I knew was “she wears short skirts I wear t-shirts…”. It’s just a happy, feel-good song, man, and the music video is a work of art. Anyone wanna exchange window messages with me?
“Girl Almighty” - One Direction
First, One Direction. The first music video I ever watched was Kiss You, which is without a doubt an artistic masterpiece. Second, my sister made me a video for my 11th birthday and this was the background music. That video is also an artistic masterpiece, and it’s the biggest reason why I love "Girl Almighty" so much.
“Paris” - The Chainsmokers
I wrote two pages on how much this song means to me for an English assignment last year. Short and sweet version: I remember the first time I heard the song, which was at club volleyball practice in 7th grade. I listened to the song again in 9th grade, almost cried, and those memories associated with volleyball around the time I heard the song for the first time are so cherished.
“King of Anything” - Sara Bareilles
I also remember the first time I heard this bad boy, which was in the car on the way back to the hotel from Lake Louise in Banff, Canada. My sister and I were sharing earbuds, and she showed me this song and “Holy Ground” by Taylor Swift. Conclusion: in love. I now listen to this song whenever I want to be my baddest self and drink my coffee while staring you down across the table.
“Heartbreak Girl” - 5 Seconds of Summer
Ah yes, boy bands. This song reminds me so vividly of 7th grade, especially since one of my close middle school friends told me to listen to this song and it’s what got me into 5SOS in the first place. When I hear this song I remember reading fantasy novels and geeking out, jamming out to hella upbeat music, and all the friends I made in middle school and miss talking to (hit me up).
“Ripple Effect” - Scott Helman
My sister showed me this song along with “broken” by lovelytheband on Thanksgiving when we were waiting for my brother to arrive at the baggage claim after his flight. I think this was the first time wearing airpods and I was astounded (by the song and the airpods). I listened to this song on repeat during that same Thanksgiving break, and a year later I listened to the rest of the album and absolutely fell in love.
“Roses” - Shawn Mendes
When I was in eighth grade I thought the lyrics for this song could be the eighth wonder of the world. Can someone tell me that “but I got you this rose and I need to know; will you let it die or let it grow?” isn’t absolute genius? No? Thought so. I love Shawn Mendes (especially the songs “Imagination” and “Mutual” like yes those were my everything in 7th and 9th grade), and these lyrics were really cool and ~metaphorical~ to me. Also, no one needs to know the number of dances I choreographed to this song in my bedroom.
“Superhero” - Lauv
Absolute dream of a song. I listened to way too much of Lauv’s first album in 9th grade, and I really got to channel my hopeless romantic self. I love the meaning behind this song, which is explained in the music video (so good). The dancing in the music video is beautiful, and you still don’t want to know the number of dances I choreographed to this song in my bedroom.
“She Used to Be Mine” - Sara Bareilles
My favorite song of all time. I know all of the lyrics and MAN I wish I could sing this song but my weak vocal cords can’t do no belting. I remember always singing this song while we were walking along the streets in China, and it's so emotional; the climax hits you every single time. Absolutely perfect song. Would love to go see Waitress.
“Crush” - Tiffany Day and Lucian
This song came to me at a sadder time in my life, during which I was just down in the dumps because of unrequited love (you know the feeling). This song is more of a “goodbye, get out of my life you manipulative person” song, but it was about love in some way shape or form, so I was like YES LET’S LISTEN. I’m the biggest fan of Tiffany Day, and I think she’s such a skilled songwriter. Some of her earlier stuff on YouTube is part of the reason why I started songwriting, and overall she’s just unbelievably underrated.
“Golf on TV” - Lennon Stella ft. JP Saxe
I swear half of the songs on this playlist have come to me by way of my sister, and this is one of them. My sister and I have the same music taste, except mine is more sad and hers is more country. Golf on TV I listened to and immediately fell in love with (and I also fell in love with Lennon Stella afterwards). I associate this song with the time around January to March 2020, when I wasn’t the happiest but was toughin’ it out. The song’s meaning and the memories I associate with it are complete opposites, but it’s a special song to me nonetheless. Note that I don't watch golf on TV.
“Want To” - Emily Vu
This is the song I would listen to if I starred in a coming-of-age movie and was able to drive in my car on a summer night and jam out with my friends. Such a vibe. Summer 2021 I will be picking you up at 10, dapping you up and then going to Raising Cane’s to get the 3-finger combo, just you wait.
