You know those song lyrics that just hit different? Whether they’re just well-written or they have a special meaning or memory associated with them, I think we all have our fair share of favorite lyrics. These are some of mine -- a lot of them are from some of my favorite songs of all time, and others are just ones that I find particularly interesting. Hope you enjoy!
"I guess you didn't mean what you wrote in that song about me / Cause you said forever, now I drive alone past your street" - Olivia Rodrigo, "drivers license"
OLIVIA RODRIGO is the queen of my soul. This song is the definition of hurts so good and this freaking CHORUS don't get me started it's absolutely beautiful. Her storytelling in her lyrics *chef's kiss* impeccable. She has such strong Taylor Swift + Lorde vibes and I am living for it. And can we talk about the bridge? That is catharsis.
“I've been pulling you close, but pushing me further” - Clinton Kane, “Fix It To Break It”
Clinton Kane is and will forever be my king. The king wrote these lyrics, and so I present to you these lyrics. Lovely.
Shawn Mendes, “Roses” (pic cred: @ifangels on Pinterest)
I’ve talked about this before, but in middle school, I thought this specific line from “Roses” was the most poetic thing ever known to man. Let me be honest, I still think they’re so poetic. Giving this person the rose is like going out on a limb and shooting your shot -- letting it die is rejection, letting it grow is giving it a chance. The metaphors, man.
“You had a speech; you’re speechless” - Taylor Swift, “champagne problems”
First, I love “champagne problems”. Evermore is art. Second, this lyric hits different. Short and sweet, if you ask me. It’s my favorite lyric of this song. I’ve played this song a lot on the ukulele, and I love how the melodies in the verses/pre-choruses/choruses stay the same but the lyrics are different because I think you learn a lot more about the story between the two people this way. Also, the bridge of “champagne problems” is SO GOOD.
Ed Sheeran, “Supermarket Flowers” (pic cred: Visual Statements)
Favorite song off of my favorite Ed Sheeran album right here. I used to fall asleep to this song in middle school. Do y’all fall asleep to music? I don’t anymore, but maybe again sometime in the future. This song is so sad yet so beautiful -- a lyrical masterpiece for sure.
“If we can't be what we used to be / I'll do anything to keep you here / I'll even be your enemy” - Sandro Cavazza, “Enemy”
This song is the reason I decided to write this post. It reminds me of February 2020 and the feeling of not wanting to lose someone so badly that you’re willing to be enemies with them. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer, right? The point is: there are certain people you never want to lose no matter what, and this is the extent that you’d go to keep them in your life. If things between you two are never the way they used to be, at least you still have them with you. And if you think you know who this song reminds me of, you don’t. Don’t try HAHA.
Goo Goo Dolls, “Iris” (pic cred: QuoteFancy)
I’m going to be honest, I don’t know how the rest of this song goes. This is the only part I remember, but I’ve never forgotten it. I just think “Iris” is really sentimental and I love the meaning behind the song.
“She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie” - Sara Bareilles, “She Used To Be Mine”
Favorite song of all time, people. I love it. I will never stop loving it. This song is ingrained in my mind backward and forwards, so of course, it has a place in this post.
“I'm gonna miss it when it's over / I hope we never see October” - Alessia Cara, “October”
This song reminds me of morning drives in (you guessed it) October, as well as later in winter, on the way to physical therapy. I would miss the first 10-15 minutes of first period a lot because I would be coming from physical therapy, and “October” was always playing on the drives to PT. Nostalgia at its peak.
Ariana Grande, “needy” (pic cred: isa's visuals on RedBubble)
Don’t ask me how many times I wrote these lyrics in the back of my biology notebook because I was bored in class. Fun fact: I would make mashups of songs or literally write down the entirety of the lyrics to some songs in bio because I was so bored. The chorus of “needy” was written many, many times. That’s all you need to know.
“I only saw you once in a Chinese restaurant” - Scott Helman, “Chinese Restaurant”
Scott Helman is super underrated, in my opinion, so you should totally listen to his songs. “Chinese Restaurant” is a special song to me because it reminds me of a specific time (late 2019-early 2021, maybe?). This song also reminds me of a specific situation that took place in March 2020 in the early stages of quarantine. Basically, this song is about only seeing someone once but imagining a future with them and kicking yourself for not talking to them. My friends can attest to this, and maybe this is because I read a lot of books and I’m a huge hopeless romantic, but I love imagining future scenarios that will never in my life happen. In March 2020, there was a situation where I wish I talked to someone but didn’t and kind of lost my chance to meet someone cool, and instead of getting over it, I wrote a whole freaking song about it that imagined this whole dreamy future. I don’t know. Don’t ask. The song was pretty good, though.
Jonas Blue and JP Cooper, “Perfect Strangers” (pic cred: @miles_to_smile on We Heart It)
Following up from the previous song, this song is one that makes me dream of future scenarios the most. Especially these lyrics -- it’s the whole “what if” situation, you know? It’s like when you pass by someone, you two could end up being the best of friends if things go right, or they could be someone you see once and never again.
“But for now, I'll love you through the phone / And for now, our friends will fill this home” - Lauv, “For Now”
I have very much not been in a long-distance relationship, but this song was my first favorite from Lauv’s second album. I’ve said this before and I’ll say that again, but that album reminds me of late-night drives alone in the backseat and it’s a specific set of memories that I associate that set of songs with. I also heard Jess and Gabriel Conte’s cover of “For Now” on Instagram, and I thought it was absolutely perfect. Although I can’t specifically relate to these lyrics, they take on kind of a nostalgic tone for me.
“But maybe one day we can break the distance” - Ashton Edminster, “Break the Distance”
I was reminded to include “Break the Distance” in this post after I put “For Now”, and I actually haven’t listened to this song in a while. Again, I have never been in a long-distance relationship, but to me, this song makes me think of long-distance friendships, which I actually do have experience with. I remember listening to “Break the Distance” in eighth grade and just missing my friends, so this song has a special meaning to me for sure. Now that I think about it, this song is also applicable for quarantine too. Dear friends: I miss you.
I hope you all got some music recommendations and learned a little more about the most special songs to me. See you next time!
