tl;dr literally best book ever and amazing conclusion to my fav duology
Premise
The battle on Sharr is over. The dark forest has fallen. Altair may be captive, but Zafira, Nasir, and Kifah are bound for Sultan’s Keep, determined to finish the plan he set in motion: restoring the hearts of the Sisters of Old to the minarets of each caliphate, and finally returning magic to all of Arawiya. But they are low on resources and allies alike, and the kingdom teems with fear of the Lion of the Night’s return.
As the zumra plots to overthrow the kingdom’s darkest threat, Nasir fights to command the magic in his blood. He must learn to hone his power into a weapon, to wield not only against the Lion but against his father, trapped under the Lion’s control. Zafira battles a very different darkness festering in her through her bond with the Jawarat—a darkness that hums with voices, pushing her to the brink of her sanity and to the edge of a chaos she dare not unleash. In spite of the darkness enclosing ever faster, Nasir and Zafira find themselves falling into a love they can’t stand to lose…but time is running out to achieve their ends, and if order is to be restored, drastic sacrifices will have to be made.

Review
“Hope, he had learned, arrived swiftly, seeking to bloom in the darkest of places and in the most harrowing of times.”
WOW. This was an amazing conclusion to what is now one of my favorite duologies. I honestly can't express what this series means to me. I will now go sob and look at fanart.
This book itself is quite long, so it took me much longer than usual to read all of it. However, I enjoyed being able to savor the story and get lost in Arawiya for a bit. The beginning was a bit slow, but I soon became invested in the story, similar to how I became very invested in We Hunt the Flame.
We Free the Stars made me laugh (a lot -- I had to designate a separate highlight color for funny moments), made me cry (partially happy tears though), and made me fall in love with the zumra all over again. I know I say this a lot, but these folks are my platonic soulmates. I love each and every one of them, and I loved their development and depth. PS: Altair, I know I said you were my platonic soulmate but if you'd like to marry me, I'd be completely fine with that.
Of course, the writing was beautiful -- I didn't expect anything less from Hafsah Faizal. SO MUCH LOVE.
